Chapter 13

Chapter 13
“Possession”

They were in the air for a long time. From Kansas City is not a flight that is made non-stop. They went to St. Louis first and, luckily, made a connection to New York. Often you get shuffled off to Chicago and then to New York, but, by the luck of the draw, they were saved that detour. Sanchez was in charge of making sure all of their luggage would make all those transitions. It was only fair since most of the trunks carried his ordinance.

As they sat on the final leg of the flight they had 5 more hours in the air. In the old days of the Concorde that would have been cut in half. On this flight there would be time to watch 3 films and still have about half and hour left.

“You can only take possession of something no longer in transition,” Vaskania told Muntz. “To take possession you must do so formally. You must admit that you are the possessor.”

“If you take something, even as a courier, aren’t you the possessor?”

“Not unless you profess to be the possessor. I know this sounds very formal and such, but Demons and others are tied to just such a tight reach into our world. If it were easy the old ones would flood over us and ravage the Earth openly within an hour.”

“You make it sound like H.P. Lovecraft,” the author smirked, “The Ancient Ones and all.”

“Lovecraft and others of his brotherhood, of which Collier Paige may have become one, were more right than wrong in what was written. Those Ancient one they spoke of were spoken of in many ancient texts. There were great penalties for saying their names aloud, or casting them in print,” Claus added, “The Hebrew God was not the only one who didn’t want you to say his name.”

“How many of these demons are there?” she asked.

Claus and Vaskania looked at each other in open amusement.

“Their number is beyond numbers,” Vaskania, “They number like the stars in the sky.”

“The ones with enough power to openly affect our world is in the hundreds. The ones who could be involved with a curse like the one we are investigating is in the realm of 30 to 40.”

“And the ones you named back at the house,” She began.

“Are our prime candidates,” Claus said, “but by no means the only suspects.”

At that moment the lights in the cabin blinked.

The cabin dipped a few hundred feet and most people aboard screamed.

The cabin went totally dark and the plane dropped another hundred feet.

Everyone was screaming and the breathing masks had dropped from the overhead compartments.

It was at this point that the figures, all transparent and seemingly without substance, began to float up and down the aisle of the plane.

They screamed, you will forgive me, like banshees.

Many people on the flight could have used a couple of Depends undergarments.

The plane turned instantly 45 degrees and seemed to be flying sideways now.

Lightning and thunder encircled the aircraft.

Vaskania turned to Claus and shouted, “This is not a demon. This is someone on this side. Perhaps a summoner.”

Claus nodded, “This is personal. They know we’re coming.”

The plane cartwheeled and Muntz joined that club of people who needed the Depends.

Vaskania began to chant something, but no one could understand.

The ghostly figures began flying into people’s faces and screaming their names.

The plane’s engines now completely stopped.

They were falling to Earth.

People were so scared they forgot to pray.
