One of my favorites

“Monsters”

Why do they fascinate us?
These monsters, these creatures of night?
It’s not the fear;
Our lives have enough.
We return to them because they are us.
Frankenstein did nothing to deserve
The world he never asked to be
brought into.
The Hunchback wished only to find beauty,
Not to be a hated freak.
But we have all been ostracized and misunderstood.
We have all been reviled,
When all we wanted to do,
Was share the loveliness.
We are Dracula,
We have all done terrible and dark things
To fulfill longings and needs
We hope will never see light of day.
And like the wolfman,
We are sometimes driven
by unexplainable forces,
As ethereal as the moon.
And that driving has made us hurt those
We love the most.
Like the Phantom, we all have sat
In distant darkness,
And listened to music we could
Make unforgettable.
But we could never show our face.
We are all monsters.
Children of the night.
They make the music
Our timid souls will not let us make.
