"Heart of the Crown" Chapter 86

Chapter 86

Gathering Terror

As hard as it might be to believe, this was not the worst situation that Hawk had ever found himself in.

It would be hard to come up with the particulars at this very moment in time, him being under soul-sucking phantasm attack and all, but he knew this was not the darkest pit he had ever dug himself out of, or found himself in.

Once he had been flung into a pit of screaming black leeches. There were hundreds of them and he was armed with nothing but a single dagger and his annoyance. The sound was so hideous that it fueled a rage that became the leeches’ ultimate undoing.

Then there was the time he fought the vampire camels of Sestion. But that is a tale that should never be told to anyone who is in the least sober.

The escape would be the first order of business; nothing would have been worth consideration until after he found a way out of these leather straps that held him in the chair.

He would have to find a weapon, but in his freedom he would have to use what was holding him to be armed.

He pulled free of a strap and pulled that same piece of leather loose as well. The strap became a whip to hold the oncoming she-beasts at bay.

It wasn’t easy to give each of the three females enough attention to keep them from getting close enough to kill him.

While he struck the things with his leather weapon, he worked to pull the other arm free.

After a few minutes and several near passes by the jaws of the creatures, he freed his other hand.

With this hand he not only loosed the restraint, he pulled the arm of the chair free to use as a bat.

His legs were not free, and they were closing in. They were not going to give him the time to move from the chair.

Their assaults grew more and more fierce.

The final battle would come here and now.
