The Perfect World Fallacy - - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Escape
Sebastian was glad for the big old clunker car that his friend drove.
It was not glamorous, nor snazzy.
It did have seats large enough to fit his larger than normal frame, and it was here.
With the buzz that surrounded them every step of their exit he knew that it would be moments before they were recognized. He was sure that the mob mentality was taking over.
These people had nothing in their lives to get excited about.
Diners usually played radios in the background for music, but the one they just left was quiet. Not even that damn Country dreck that he hated.
There hadn’t been a flake of seasoning on the food. Most places were wary of over spicing, the possibility of offending one palate was great, but you could depend on at least salt and pepper. But this food hadn’t even that much flavor.
These people were without color or flavor.
Finding something they could get excited about would be deadly.
This was brought home as they stopped at a traffic light.
A man walking past, reading his newspaper, glanced into the car. His reaction was immediate.
He began shouting and pointing.
An angry mob gathered out of nowhere. Suddenly they were threatened by being drowned in enraged populace.
Harriet jumped on the gas and the tires squealed as they bolted out of the crowd. Sebastian looked back and made sure no one had been hurt. Just because they were being treated like criminals, he hated the idea of acting like criminals.
“Where are we going?” Sebastian asked, without a ounce of breath to spare.
“Right now I’m just driving.”
“We can’t do that long, they’ll have the cops looking for us,” Claus said, “But, I know a safe house.”
“That one the F.B.I. set up for you guys?” Harriet asked.
“It’s out of the way . . .”
“And the F.B.I. set it up for you, and . . .” Harriet interjected.
“The same agency who works for the President,” Sebastian realized.
“I think we need to keep going till we have a better idea.”
“I doubt that I will ever feel safe again,” Claus said.
“After facing down the threats we have in our lives, it really bites that we might finally take the dirt dive because of people from ‘The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.’”
“We’ve got to find the source of the Seed Pods,” Sebastian said.
“After we find a hiding place to serve as a headquarters,” Dante said, “And then we should start getting in touch with some of the other names on that last.”
“They’ll be from our field,” He added, “So we shouldn’t trust any name we are not familiar with.”
“Yes, they may have some names put in there just to infiltrate any group gathered by us.”
Now the war would begin.
