During the 90's when I was criss crossing the country doing Stand-Up, there was another phenomenon going on that we all know about today. Wal-Mart and Blockbuster were destroying the little Mom and Pop video stores all around the nation. During hundreds of "Going out of business sales" and "we're converting to DVD sales" I picked up a lot of little films that would not make it to DVD for years, if ever. Today I am burning one of those little gems to DVD. It is 1974's "The Legend of Hillbilly John." If you ever read the "John the Wanderer" stories by Manley Wade Wellman, then you understand what this is about. If not you have missed a truly American experience. Mostly these are voyages into Appalachian Mythos, with a Fantasy seasoning. The film had nearly no budget plus some real 1960-70's consciousness rolled in. It also had a lot of Hoyt Axton music thrown in just for good measure. So, something good came out of something very bad. And thus goes life. Also burned "Journey to the Center of the Earth," 3 "Captain & the Kids" Cartoons, "The Circus" (1928-Chaplin), "The Unknown" (1927-Chaney) & "The Private Life of Henry VIII."
