Dec. 9th, 2008

Yesterday I burned "The Front Page" (1931) & "Paper Moon." I am also collecting Justice League Unlimited, Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes" and am 2 episodes short of having a complete run of Thundarr. They are still not showing the second season of the Herculoids (damn). Today I' doing "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea," "Fortunes of Captain Blood," "The Swiss Family Robinson" and "The Pirates of Penzance." Later today I'll make Tuna Salad for dinner.
Thank you Universe for letting me be able to read again. For reasons to involved to go into I was without this most precious of gifts for about 3-5 years (I am not the best at setting times in my own past). Now that I can read again I cannot get enough. The book in the TV rooms (if the show is paused, or during long commercials) is Cabel Cobb's "The Angel of Darkness" (sequel to "The Alienist." In the office I am reading "The Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu" (the first book in the series. In the bedroom I am reading a new Nero Wolfe and in the car I am reading "The Bid Knockover" (which for a long time I thought was the only Dashell Hammett Contenintal Op stories I hadn't read. Then I recently found that there is one more called "Nightmare Town and other stories. I do have a copy on its way to me. I am a huge Hammett fan. If you don't know him he created Sam Spade in "The Maltese Falcon" and also wrote "The Thin Man.") All of these are junk books, not so looked down on as my beloved Doc Savage or the Spider or G-8 and his Battle Aces or The Shadow (which are Black Mask quality pulps just like Lovecraft or Conan or Elric) but I have read so many of the "Great Classics" that I am allowing myself the time to really read the stuff that I pushed aside earlier to have a base in the touch stones of English lit. with which to refer when I wrote. Now I am reading the things that made me happy when I was 10. This is as close as I will ever come to a mid-life crisis, so just back off and let me enjoy myself. I may enough throw in the occasional Louis L'amour or go back and read some Doyle or Burroughs again. Back before I had so many surgeries and the anesthetic did so much damage to my brain I had an I.Q. that rated 165. Now I doubt that I would get better than 125. So I'm going to read stuff for fun. Maybe some Victor Hugo or Duman just to match up with Lucky Starr, Space Ranger and the original Bond books. On those black and white pages my world is great and life is wonderful. I'm going to read until my eyeballs fall out.
