In Japanese and Chinese homes, when I was growing up in Hawaii, Grandparents and even Great Grandparents lived with and worked with their descendants. The American side of me always felt, "Oh, my God, what a loss of independence for all of them!" But I also remember a respect for the wisdom of age and the freedom of always having someone to turn to. Much is gained, but much is lost
