Chapter 29
The Snare
Through the flickering flame of the chandelier above the travelers’ heads, the pair watched, nearly gleeful.
“For such an accomplished mage, she has fallen into your trap with the simplicity of a cow on ice,” the Count said to his co-conspirator.
“Do not think so,” the Wizard cautioned, “If the talisman had not come with an ample coating of spells to cloak itself, she could not have been drawn in.”
“That is why you continue to cast . . .”
“And will do so until they have crossed over into the haunted land of Techlamange.” The magician said with his brow furrowed with concentration.
“Any less than she might be off guard,” he continued, “but the moment the veil is even slightly lifted, she will know all. And that will be the end of the trap, and possibly the end of us.”
“She is that powerful?” his partner gasped.
“She is more powerful than even she knows,” was the answer, “And that is why she must be taken out of the equation. With one like her still about, those like us will always be playing a day behind her.”
“What of the others?”
“They are nothing,” the mage said with a sneer. “I leave them entirely to you and your men. They should entertain you with their deaths, but they offer no real threat.”
“I go to gather my assassins,” the Count said as he drew his sword. “And when you place us in the points that will make up our ambush, we will wait for the fun.”
After he had left the room, the air throbbed with the glow of dark magic.
