Chapter 54
Closing the Gap
Any hope of sneaking up on their opponents vanished as Morgana began roaring a call out to her fellow dragon.
“What the . . .” Slip rushed to Sandor holding the reins, but then realized there was nothing left for it. If they were going to do anything, it would be now.
He went back to his partner, not that there was any undue amount of preparation that they had not gone over a dozen times already.
Hawk was laying arrows out on the saddle seat before him, just at arms length from his standing position. He had twelve shafts left and meant to use every one if needed. He could shoot everyone but the one holding the child and the dragon itself. Either of those targets could cause danger to the baby and that was out of the question.
Slip readied the ropes that were attached to the base of the saddle itself, with which they intended to swing over to the corresponding saddle on the other dragon.
Morgana was squawking louder now and had drawn the attention of the Count and his three-man crew.
The first volley of arrows streaked towards them with no effect. Allowing for the speed of flight and the movement of their mount had been more than the archers could manage.
Hawk let fly his first glowing arrow, still steeped in the magic Cela of Tar had imbued them with in the other dimension. The bolt passed through an archer and returned as the man’s body fell towards the ground below. It would be falling for so long that they would be far away before it hit anything.
Hawk’s second arrow dropped two assassins and left the Count alone.
The Count reached into a cradle that was strapped to the saddle and held up the bundle that held the child.
If he was struck by an arrow, the child would fall to earth with him.
Sandor hailed Morgana, and they moved in closer.
They would have to try to board.
