Chapter 65
Escape?
Flying high above the mountain tops had an interesting effect on the three men. They had no idea that the air was thin; they just thought they were giddy with their evasion of captivity and pointless battle.
Morgana began to move lower without being bid to do so; she was much smarter than any might give her credit for without looking deep into her eyes.
Hawk was trying to remember how many arrows he had that retained their magical abilities, and how long that enchantment might remain potent.
Slip was holding the baby and wondering when they might come upon something to eat. It had been a very long time since they had been fed, and he was beginning to feel a bit testy about it.
Sandor was enjoying the wind whipping through his hair and Morgana responding to his wishes. It was an intoxicating combination.
Suddenly spears whizzed by them. None of them hit the mark, but they made their point.
They looked back and saw something they would have sworn would not happen.
In the midst of all-out battle, a troop of Talons had left their people helpless to attempt to catch them. It must have been because they wanted to bring Morgana back to her worshiping minions.
That was why they didn’t hit them with their spears; you cannot wound your god. Neither would they give up until they could bring her back.
Then came another stunning surprise.
Wearing some kind of make-shift artificial wings came nearly 20 Hespons. They didn’t actually seem to fly; rather, they appeared to be gliding. It might just be that they had decided that whatever the winged humans wanted, they wanted just as much. Morgana would be a captive worth much to them.
Then came another unexpected recognition.
The second dragon, guided by the Count, was following at a great distance.
The true surprise came when Morgana decided she wanted to be with her mate.
Sailing in a wide circle, she turned back toward her fellow. Nothing Sandor could say would dissuade her.
They surprised everyone behind them with the movement.
It seemed to be a brilliant strategy of some kind.
Hawk wished it was.
