“The Enemy of My Enemy”
Sebastian Claus had steeled himself against a vicious attack, instead he watched the sallow face man before him voraciously eat the glob that had been an invisible hood over the terrified human’s head.
He ate like a hungry dog that discovered a steak in his food dish. The man who had led Claus here tittered as he watched.
“You,” Claus asked meekly, “Are a wizard?”
Licking his fingers like he had just finished wonderfully greasy fried chicken, the thin man was slow to answer.
Then he looked up at his guest and said, “I am Tezla, the Wizard of Menzalopak.”
He followed these words with a deep bow, during which he located a small piece of the glop and couldn’t stop himself from picking it up and slurping it into his mouth like so much
spaghetti.
“I’m not from around here,” Sebastian announced.
“You are from what we call ‘The World of Wars,’” The ragged man who had acted as his guide stated, “That was why I was scared of you.”
“We do not have armed conflict,” Tezla told him, “We do have wars, but they are one on one. One wizard representing his clan, vies against another. That second one is likewise representing some other followers.”
“I see,” Claus said.
“While there is conflict, no innocents are involved,” Tezla said.
“I need to accomplish something on your world in order to return to mine,” Claus told them.
“I can smell the enchantment on you,” Tezla said with distain, “Let me analyze what you really need.”
“I must warn you,” Sebastian inserted.
“An evil entity sent you here,” Tezla said while never pausing in his fiddling with mechanical devices in the laboratory before him, “Let us not say his name lest we bring him here.”
“I just did not want to bring you into this without letting you know how dangerous this creature is . . .” Claus said.
The Wizard turned and walked to his guest and said, face to face, “He may learn what ‘dangerous’ is when he meets me.”
The Wizard raised his arms to their zenith over his head. The room reverberated with thunder and lights of every color throbbed blindingly.
Sebastian Claus wondered if he might not have released a greater threat than the one he had already faced.
