What we expect
Jun. 4th, 2004 12:23 amIt is said that one generation's luxury becomes the next generations necessity. When kids talk about poverty, they have no idea what poverty is. For many of them not having new clothes, a car, cable, the internet are all things that make you poor. They cannot imagine going without food for days at a time (without being on a diet) or living on the street. I've done that. And I got by. When I went overseas, and saw people who really had nothing, then I began to understand why we don't understand. We can't picture giving up a child t feed the others. We couldn't conceive of actually starving in sight of other people, with no one to help. And the lack of help wasn't greed or uncaring, it was the lack of the ability to survive, and have your family survive. I try to tell kids that not having new sneakers is not a big deal, but they don't get it. And that is why the barbarians will break down the door to this castle we have, unless we wake up. Soon.
