Jan. 17th, 2009 11:09 amThis morning I want to talk about something that I have been thinking about for several days now. We stand at the precipice people.
So many people are saying, "Barak will solve it all, we are saved now."
This is the thought that will push us over the edge and destroy us.
Barack Obama is a good man, what he has asked it what America needs. But you need to really listen to what he is saying. He is offering us the chance to save ourselves. For eight years we have had a government that has gotten in the way of the people and released all the greatest evils of greed to have free rein. We have had that before.
The twenties under Coolidge were the "Roaring 20's" where "The Business of America is Business." we know where that led.
The eighties under Ronald Regan were "Deregulate and get out of the way," complete with another era of union busting and greed that became known as the "Go-Go, It's about me 80's" and brought us to the edge again. Without the fight of a Democratic Congress and the follow-up of the Clinton era we would have gone over the edge again.
Bush jr. had no such stops. He told people that the "Free Market" was everything. Again we stand at the edge.
What needs to change is us. We need to tell our kids that making money is not what life is about. They will reach their 40's and wonder "I'm well off, but whatever became of my life?" If we tell them, "Helping and Learning are what life is about. Being kind and tolerant is what humanity are for." then we will have given them a legacy beyond a bank account.
There is a scene in "Guys and Dolls" that I will paraphrase. Sky Masterson says, "My father took me aside one day and said, 'Son, I have not a lot of cash with which I can give you. Let me give you this advice that is better than money. Son, someday a man will approach you and say that he can take a new pack of cards, on which the seal has not been broken, and he will bet you that he can make the Jack of Diamonds jump out of that deck and spit cider in your ear. Son, this is a bet that you do not take. For I can promise you that if you do you will end up with cider in your ear."
Friends, this is a bit of advice I will give you. If you do not look beyond what Barack Obama and the government can do for you and look for what we can do for each other, you will end up with cider in your ear, and not only that, but Cider that your children will have to pay for.
I look to the inauguration with great hope. I believe that this is a good man and, if we do not expect him to do it for us, but to facilitate the ability for us to do it for ourselves, then we may get out of this with a better America.
I believe in this country because it is constantly reinventing itself, as are we. Of of this inferno of problems may be emerge having used it as a forge to create a better world. And that is a legacy we can be proud to pass on to our children.
Mr. President, I, for one, stand awaiting to work with you.
C. Wayne Owens.
