Chapter 16
Horror by Moonlight
They looked very little like anything human.
The amphibians were covered in blue-green metallic armor from their flat, webbed feet to their triangular shaped head.
Their clawed hands dug deep into the wood of the hull as they awaited a signal from their 8 foot tall leader.
Giandal, the leader, waited until every sound from within the ship quieted to near silence.
When the clicking language of the invaders exploded, the 12 massive warriors climbed onto the deck of the ship.
The sound of their clicking brought Hawk to attention, and the first sight of the gigantic creatures send the agile man up a mast. There he stood and loaded a shaft into his crossbow. He waited for the perfect shot before giving away his position, but the arrow shattered as it found its target.
Giandal looked up at the man and clicked orders to his followers. Two of them immediately began to climb the mast.
Two others went through the hatch looking for the targeted cargo.
One of them flew back onto the deck, as Sandor emerged with the second one clasped in both hands. The warrior continued to struggle with the large man, but the bezerker fury was on him.
Verner came out with a pistol, but it was slapped from his hand by an amphibian. That same amphibian nearly lost a hand to Sabre’s cutlass.
Somewhere below deck a dog began to howl.
Giandal reached around Verner’s throat with one hand and lifted him into the air. The man’s gurgling sounds brought his brother leaping to his aid.
The other pirates were fighting with the armored killing machines, but they were not doing as well as they might wish. At least three had fallen, and all of them had been thrown into the icy waters.
As the sound of the canine rose, the armor of the invaders began to soften, and the cutlasses began to have much more effect.
Sandor smashed into the leader of the band of warriors with the full force of his frenzy. The huge amphibian barely reacted. His power was amazing, but Sandor was unyielding.
His fists pounded the face and body of Giandal. The giant turned and clicked at Sandor and pointed his other hand out to sea.
Coming over the horizon was the Death’s Head fleet, with all its cannons prepared for battle.
Sandor pulled the helmet from the giant’s head and smashed his fist through the face of his foe, who still held Verner’s now unmoving body.
Sandor set himself to break the arm of the giant and release his brother.
Giandal reacted to the attack by doing the unthinkable with his claw. The razor sharp fingers dug into the flesh of his hostage until they entered the flesh.
Sandor flailed with every bit of energy he could muster, but it wasn’t enough.
With a snap, his brother’s head fell to the wooden deck and rolled away.
The scream of the big man was a horrible thing to hear. But the attack on the amphibian was more than anyone there could believe.
The fists of the remaining brother pounded unendingly on his enemy, until hunks of flesh flew from the giant, unmoving underwater soldier. His green blood was everywhere, but no where so much as on the hands and face of Sandor.
The remaining amphibians fled to swim towards the approaching fleet. But there were 5 dead fishmen and 4 dead pirates lying randomly on the ship.
Sabre stood on the prow, watching the Scarecrow’s ships coming for another battle.
He didn’t feel so much like the Master of the Seas at this point.
