Chapter 26
Farewell, My Pirates
Slip and Hawk were asleep on the deck, as calm as the sea itself. Cela was in her own cabin, while Sandor sleep with the infant’s cocoon in his arms. None of them were aware of Sabre standing watch as the false dawn came and went.
With the first rays of a lovely dawn he spotted land, and the port of Bella Alba came into view only minutes later.
He woke Hawk to share the news of their arrival and the soldier began to gather the others and make ready for their departure.
The flagship of the Death’s Head fleet pulled along side the Poisoned Slug and the two captains said their goodbyes.
Jack Scythe pledged a bond between the two that, it must be admitted, caught The Black Corsair speechless. Then in the ultimate surprise the two men embraced.
Cela of Tar handed The Scarecrow a hand made talisman to ward off harmful magic (and, though he did not know, women with trouble in their character). Scythe offered Hawk, Sandor and Slip a berth on his ship any time they wanted, and they all said they would consider the offer an honor and let it go at that.
The fleet sailed away and the Slug pulled into the harbor.
It must be admitted, there were a few tears at the departure.
This feeling of personal linkage, even though they had been at sea together less than two weeks. Still it felt that they had gone through so much that they had spent a lifetime aboard.
The party stood on the dock as the Pirate ship pushed out to sea again.
Now they were alone and on their own again. They had no idea just how alone they were, and that the losses they would know would be great.
