Chapter 81
Rodentia Maximus
The protection spell was working well, but the drain on his psychic energies was exorbitant.
He would not be able to hold this level of deterrent for very long at all.
Even now he could feel the shield begin to waver under the unabated rodent onslaught.
His power had never before been so insignificant in battle. His power had always been unquestioned. Most enemies would give way much before ever having to face his storm of grievance.
But this damned rodent looked on him as nothing more than a trifling snack. He would not be a valiant conquest, but just another meal. Something to be eaten and then forgotten as the quest for sustenance continued, only slightly assuaged.
For the first time in longer than Robez could remember, he knew he would have to find a new tack.
What could he do to make this thing stop attacking him and possibly become an ally?
It would like to be fed.
He cried out in the most forceful voice his tiny body would allow him to produce, “Cardierum Cheddior!”
A massive (to him) chunk of cheese was a wavering vision for a moment, and then a solid source of cheddar scent.
A second later the mouse lost all interest in the tiny human and launched himself into a feverish, ravenous feeding frenzy.
The cheese didn’t stand a chance.
Robez was able to rest for a moment.
As the beast came to a point where the cheese was growing small enough for Robez to be aware of searching, searing red eyes scanning the room, the wizard stood again, with his arms spread.
“Vole Raspbeneir Brie!” he shouted.
A rain of nearly liquid cheese fell from above and, in large chunks, smelled up the room.
The animal’s face seemed to relax. It almost looked as if it were . . . something approaching . . . tranquil.
Robez used his hands to wipe cheese off his face and shoulders.
