Chapter 85

Love is Never Lost

She began by singing her heartsong. It was the song she heard inside her mother, with the heartbeat keeping time and the rest of the body singing their own parts.

Every creature has a heartsong; some never let it come to the surface of their mind, but it is always a part of them.

Morgana let the song be her comfort, as little as it could be, in times of uncertainty.

She looked at the distant love of her life, Simvast, who was stretching his facial muscles into almost impossible contortions. She knew he was doing his best to let her know that he never stopped thinking of her and was always plotting some new plan to reunite with his mate.

She suddenly remembered that while she had fired a blast of flame from her throat in an attempt to breach the wall between them, she had another weapon that she had not yet used.

She curled her body into the crescent form needed for her to emit a “Tail Blast.”

This was a kind of energy that was seldom if ever used by dragons.

This was a force whose origin was not really completely known.

She had only seen her mother use it once, when she was beset by a troop of Static Monkeys. There were many of these monsters (she couldn’t remember how many because, to be honest, she was just too young to remember the incident with any clarity. She only recalled the image of the act) and they were impervious to flames.

Static Monkeys were more irritating than dangerous, unless they could find a way around a childling. They had been known to kill and eat the young, even of their own kind.

Morgana shivered at even the thought of such barbarism.

Simvast saw what she was doing and mirrored the action.

They disappeared from each other in the flash of the blast, but only for a second.

Morgana moved forward and came to the area that had withheld passage just a moment before.

She lashed the invisible barrier with her tail, and was pleasantly surprised to find it was not there.

She began to fly to her mate, but was stopped by another wall.

Still, she was closer, as was her love.

The two dragons smiled at their progress.

Morgana wept and waited for the power in her body to build to the point she could blast this new barrier.

Simvast looked away for a moment, then looked back with a smile.

Morgana wept harder, knowing that he had turned away so as not to let her see him cry.

She was struck again by how much she loved that dragon.

She wondered if he knew she was carrying his offspring.
