Chapter 98
Dragon Rescue
Morgana’s senses were at their absolute peak as she crashed through the roof and directed fire at the man in black who was trying to hit her with some kind of double headed ax.
She knew that he was probably more surprised than anything else, but she had to protect herself. Plus, if he stood between her and the chance of reuniting with Simvast, then he would have to fall.
She would have gone through an army of a thousand ax-wielding men if that was what would be necessary.
A few feet from where she hovered she saw the doorway into the only other room in this underground chamber, so she moved in that direction.
But before she was halfway to the door, she was beset by attackers again.
This time they were human, or, in fact, human-looking females. They were, if they were human, the most vicious-looking examples of the race she had ever encountered.
The women took flight and came toward her. There were two of them, and they had sharp teeth and claws like any jungle predator.
Not wanting to move instantly into killing, the dragon swept the first of the attackers away with her tail.
The second she-thing latched onto her neck and began biting. If she hadn’t had thick, scaly skin, she might have had her throat ripped out.
Morgana flipped over and shoved the woman away, but had to deal with the second right away.
Now they were both holding on to her with all their might.
They were not hurting her, but they were annoying. They continued to scratch and bite and hiss and do anything that they could to bring her down.
The dragon tired of the bother. She flew up as high as the chamber would let her and then slammed down onto the ground. It was just the thing that dislodged the two of them.
When she saw that they were coming at her again, she dispatched them with a shower of flame. She was sorry that they had allowed her no other course of action.
Now she was able to continue through the doorway.
Inside that room she did not find her mate, but she did see someone she seemed to remember.
One of the humans who had treated her so well just recently was standing over the body of yet another of the malignant vampires.
When Hawk looked up and saw their dragon, he was so relieved that he dropped his weapon and put his arms around her.
She was touched by the human’s gesture, but she still wanted to find her mate.
Hawk used the last of his vanishing strength to pull himself up on the dragon’s back.
She turned and moved back into the other room, only to find a familiar scent.
Simvast was near, she knew it.
Suddenly, unbelievably, her lover flew into the room. He also had a human on his back.
Unconscious upon the male dragon was the body of Slip.
Had Simvast words, he would have told how the little man had fallen from the sky above and landed on him, just a moment before he disappeared and then reappeared in this strange castle.
The two dragons intertwined their necks in the usual embrace.
Before anything else could happen, the room was rocked by a clap of thunder.
That report was followed by an impossible downpour that quickly filled the chamber.
Slip awoke as the rain crashed down on them. He did so just in time to cling to the dragon. He had only a moment to realize that this was a different dragon from the one he had ridden on in the past.
As the four of them held onto each other with everything they had left, the flood dragged them away with a speed that would take their breaths away.
In seconds they were gone and the water in the castle evaporated.
A rainbow stretched across the sky.
