Chapter 17

The Arrival

The town of Marshland was something of an extended suburb/rural village.

It was close enough get the newspapers from the city, without having to worry about overflow from the crime wave.

It was close enough to get the TV and radio stations without ever feeling represented by them.

There were farms here, cows and horses and hay and all the things that you would hope to find in an area called “The Country.”

They had to find a place called “Brewster Farm” and didn’t have the confidence to stop and ask for directions. Luckily the original directions took them to the massive estate. It was a gigantic working farm that you don’t find owned by a single family anymore.

The lavender picket fences went on forever, but they knew they were getting near the main house. They knew because they were not the only car going in that direction.

At first the pair found themselves scrunching down in their seats to keep from being recognized. After a time it was obvious that if they were going to get pinched it would happen no matter their height.

The cars had licenses from 4 nearby states, and also included limos and cabs from the city airport. It must have cost a fortune to bring so far from the downtown.

After noticing the gathering of autos, it soon became a traffic jam, slowly crawling to the central house.

“I hope they have food,” Claus muttered.

“I hope they have some answers,” Dante chided him.

After about 20 minutes they worked their way up to the gate and the driveway behind it. A man of about 70 was waving them into parking on the giant lawn. There were at least two hundred cars here, and that was just the ones they could see.

Harriet was sure there were plenty more behind the manor house, plus they saw people being dropped off from cars that then drove away.

That gave the investigator pause. Could those drivers be trusted? One loose lip could sink this entire ship. The cabs and limos were disquieting, but these other cars for some reason, gave her a real feeling of unease.

She knew that the list contained 4,500 names, but how many of them could have gotten away without encountering the authorities?

They had barely eluded a mob intent on capturing or killing them. It felt like those folks wouldn’t have worried either way.

She looked over at her comrade and saw him chewing something as surreptitiously as he could.

“What are you eating?” she asked firmly.

“I found a couple of Star Bursts in the glove compartment,” he said with shame blanketing him.

“Those must be at least a year old!” she replied with disgust.

“Plastic food keeps very well,” he said as he swallowed.

She turned off the car and, very pointedly, got out without saying a word.
