Family of Choice
You don’t know a thing about me, you say?
Lad come here and I’ll tell you
Of me Mum and Dad and then
I will happily tell you about
The kith that are closer than kin
I see their faces, laughing.
Holding my heart so gently in their hands
They see me so clearly
And treat me so dearly
They value my past and my plans
They cut me no slack till I need it
They know when I lie and I do
They know who I am
No a child, but a man
They expect me to be sure and be true
When I call them they come
When I need them they know it
They couldn’t care less
How I look or how I dress
When they know I’m a fool they don’t show it
Blood has its value, birth has its bond
Biology can’t be denied
But round the holiday table
The love that’s enabled
Has a link not family tied
They’re my family of choice and I love them
They’re my family of choice, they love me
And in the darkest of storms
Away from the “Norms”
It’s with them I’ll choose to be.
