Edison was here!

Hugo and I stopped at a hot dog stand that Connie said was the best in D.C. I was unimpressed, but I am not a big hot dog person. I’ve always thought they were just bologna in a bun.
When I got back to the hotel, the plan was that I would call Rayleen and get an update on what she had found. I also hoped to give her the list of numbers and add her to team working on that problem.
I tried to dial out and found myself confronted by the hotel operator. As I gave her our office number, I realized what an idiot I am.
The operator needed the 10 digit number that would finish my call to Rayleen.
10 digits.
10 numbers.
“Perhaps, you idiot,” I mumbled to myself, “these forty 10 digit numbers are phone numbers!”
A high school cheerleader would have known that at once. It took me a couple of hours.
Damn.
The rest of the evening was spent with the list split between Hugo, Rayleen and I cold-calling strangers.
We found that the abundance of my calls went to escort services in the area. It seems Dr. Fox was a regular on a great many Madams’ list.
One of the numbers made me really take notice. In the middle of the set was a number that reached the Russian Embassy, but there was no extension. He must have known who to ask for well enough that he didn’t need to write it down.
Then I got a second surprise. The ring was answered by a service. The service account was for Victor Malvito!
Hugo ran in to tell me that he got a recording at one number. The recording said, “This is Dr. Gather . . . I’m back in London this week. I check my messages daily, so leave me one.”
We got some reverse tracking and found the address for Dr. Gather’s home, which, it turned out was in New York.
Well, now we knew where we were going to stop on the way to London.
