Cat, Meet Bag

“Armageddon is not around the corner. This is only what the people of violence want us to believe. The complexity and diversity of the world is the hope for the future.”

-Michael Palin

The cameras hadn’t gone up when the shots went off, so we had no idea what was going on.

It is rare that someone could say, “We jumped out of our skin!” But this is the time, because we very nearly did.

I reached into my holster to draw my .45, but Harry hand reached out and stopped me. He was looking into the screen of the heat sensor.

“The room where the guards sit around and wait was the source of the shots. See here…” he pointed, “Len & Hugo were nowhere near there. Whatever they were shooting at, it wasn’t our guys.”

The bunch of us took a group breath.

“They’re moving,” Chester said. The cameras were up and the computers were feeding us what Len and Hugo were seeing.

There seemed to be a dark hallway ahead of them. According to the blueprints they had about 20 steps and then they would reach a door on their left that would lead them to another door. Through that door was the large double room that we had assumed to be the working lab.

They hurried like children sneaking into the kitchen in the middle of the night to steal cookies. Their legs seemed to us to be moving in slow motion, but I knew them to be moving almost at a trot.

They met not one person before they went through that last door. They jimmied the lock and entered. Hugo turned and locked the door again. They turned and stepped towards the inner door, just as the knob of the door they had just locked jiggled. It was the sentry making sure no one had unlocked the door. They had come around the corner just ahead and must have turned just as they closed the door.

Harry sighed, “That was far too close.”

I nodded just as they opened the door to go into the lab. They stopped and turned back.

The lock on the bolt was turning. Someone was unlocking the door. They were seconds away, and there was no place to hide.
